I've read a lot of advice for authors since I returned to the fray recently, I've even had the audacity to put out a few bits myself. Among the best advice I've read lately, has been this unexpected piece from Slava Rubin. As far as I know, he has nothing to do with books, by the way.
You don't need lots of money, Being a big fish in a small pond can be easier than trying to be a small fish in a big pond. It's not only about the idea, it's about how you execute it, and you need to have a brand and PR strategy right at the beginning.
Also, having a plan is a great thing, but you need to be prepared to handle a bloody nose if someone punches you in the face unexpectedly.
